Imperial Torch: Takeover Tips

Imperial Torch: Takeover Tips
Good day and welcome once again to Imperial Torch. A good, mature imperial power takes a proactive approach to its territorial expansion. Winning the hearts of the conquered makes takeovers a snap. By reviewing the mistakes of fallen regimes of the last hundred years, a number of lessons may be learned to avoid arousing the resentment of a subject people.

Methods of Invasion: Military occupation should be the last resort for empire builders. Most of the time, their expansionist aims can be achieved by economic absorption. Look what America has been able to achieve with her petro-dollars, and Great Britain with her Commonwealth. If you're rich enough to afford a superior military, it may cost less to buy your enemies than to bomb them.

Places of Worship: It's not a good idea to burn churches, mosques or any other places of worship in an occupied land, no matter how much they may offend you. The destruction of a house of prayer is generally looked upon as an act of despicable evil and can cause considerable image problems.

Working Conditions: Working hours may be increased from forty to eighty hours per week, but the rise must be gradual. At first, let them think that nothing has changed. And rather than cutting their pay by half, freeze wages and let inflation lower them.

Reprisals: Wiping out a whole village in return for losing one officer might make your point clear, but it is bound to be misunderstood by some as unnecessarily cruel and merciless. It's wiser to use such a loss as propaganda to appeal for public sympathy and cooperation.

Housing: The landscape should be spanned by communities of small rectangular homes nestled around giant factories and chemical plants.

Health and Education: Medical support should ensure a capable work force. The use of performance enhancing drugs, for instance, may be needed to meet rising production demands. Aside from their job skills, workers may be offered courses in both landscaping and shoe repair.

National Treasures: If it's not yours, don't take it. People notice when the crown jewels go missing. And think ahead: it's far too risky to unload famous artworks on the black market.
