Today on Fact or Forgery, we'll be examining an antique marriage certificate belonging to a North American who claims that it links his family tree to Richard III. Two-bit forgers typically prey on people who are eager to find something impressive in their family history, so I'm a bit skeptical. Immediately, I can see that my offhand guess was right because Hilroy wasn't in business yet in the fifteenth century. And while illiteracy was common, it is unlikely that all of the signatures would be in the same hand. Looking closer, we read that the maid of honor was Maid Marion and that the service was performed by Friar Tuck. The forger must have confused the fiendish, hunchbacked Richard III with his crusading forebear, Richard the Lionheart, the king legendarily associated with Robin Hood. Finally, as a further, well, insult to our intelligence, really, we find that the document has been sealed with the ornate badge of approval from the Bavarian Association of Taverns. Looks like another gullible foreigner is out twenty bob. Oh well, I'm sure he can afford it. Join us next week when we inspect the alleged diaries of Jack the Ripper. |
